Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery hints on Lucas Digne Future amid transfer interest from top European club

Despite being courted by a number of clubs this summer, Unai Emery has announced Lucas Digne would remain at Aston Villa.

Before the Europa Conference League play-off second leg at Villa Park on Thursday night, Digne had started all four of Villa’s opening games of the new season. He had three assists in the first leg last Wednesday and also performed admirably in the club’s Premier League victories over Everton and Burnley.

Alex Moreno was out with an injury at the start of the season and missed the entire pre-season. It gave Digne a chance to play his way into form under Emery.

This summer, the 30-year-old drew interest from a number of clubs, including OGC Nice and clubs in Italy. Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia were also interested in signing the France international, but he will not be leaving Villa Park today or later this month.

“Lucas Digne, he did a very, very good pre-season and I am very happy with him,” Emery said. “I believe he is very important to the squad, and I can confirm that he will be with us.”

Digne sought a new shirt number ahead of the new season, and the club honored his demand by swapping 27 for 12. He formerly worked in France, Italy, and Spain, where he appeared in the Champions League 23 times.

Lille, Paris Saint-Germain, Roma, and Barcelona are among the clubs where he has played. His experience will also be useful in Villa’s Europa League campaign this season.
