Following his release on Deadline Day, Premier League champion went without a club.

A year after he was reported to be ‘infuriated’ by his situation at the club, Kasper Schmeichel has bid farewell to Nice by mutual consent.

Schmeichel joined the Ligue 1 team on a free transfer last summer and made 46 appearances across all competitions. During his 11 seasons with Leicester, he won the Premier League and FA Cup.

“OGC Nice and Kasper Schmeichel have agreed to terminate the Danish international’s contract by mutual consent,” the brief statement stated.

The 36-year-old goalkeeper joined the club in Nice last summer and appeared in 46 matches across all competitions. The team sends him best wishes for the remainder of his career.

His decision to accept free agency on Deadline Day comes nearly a year after French media reported that he arrived with a’very high’ body fat percentage, with previous coach Lucien Favre benching him.

The relationship was further strained when Schmeichel’s entourage apparently went above Favre to consult club owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe about starting the season opener against Toulouse.

Schmeichel has took on a new role as a pundit on Monday Night Football alongside Jamie Carragher.

The 36-year-old has already been linked with a move to Celtic as he nears the end of his career, with father Peter playing until he was 39.

Schmeichel’s friendship with Brendan Rodgers might lead to a move to Scotland following their FA Cup victory together.

Last year, the goalkeeper stated, “For me, Brendan is one of the best managers I’ve ever seen up close, so I only have good things to say about him.”
Schmeichel began his career with Manchester City and went on loan to five other clubs, including Bury and Cardiff.

He had loan spells with Notts County and Leeds before joining Leicester, where he went on to make 479 appearances across all competitions.

He then worked with two managers during his stint at Nice, where he finished ninth in the table despite signing a three-year contract.
