Burstow signed a season-long loan agreement with the Black Cats last week, and he will be hoping to make his club debut when the Championship schedule resumes with a trip to QPR following the international break.
After moving to Stamford Bridge from Charlton in February 2022, the 20-year-old made his debut for Chelsea’s first team over the summer and appeared as a substitute in the Blues’ early-season Premier League matches against West Ham and Luton.
He turned down loan offers from many Championship clubs in favor of joining Sunderland in an effort to advance his career despite earlier this summer’s speculation linking him to the Italian powerhouse AC Milan.
Mowbray believes he is in the ideal environment to further his development and envisions leaving the Stadium of Light the following summer with a chance to contend for a spot in Chelsea’s starting lineup.
“I know he had some amazing offers, but after our chat, he wanted to come here,” the Sunderland manager, who has gained a well-deserved reputation for developing and enhancing young players, stated.
“I attempted to market this football team, and I would say that the main selling factor is the fans. What an opportunity to play in a setting so reminiscent of the Premier League.
“Get yourself ready to go and play at Stamford Bridge for Chelsea and be the number nine that bangs in all the goals and put your name next to (Didier) Drogba and all the great players that have played for Chelsea,” the announcer said. “There are 40,000 people in the stadium roaring the team on.”
Given the fierce competition from other options, Mowbray acknowledges that he had to engage in some difficult haggling to convince Burstow to join Wearside.
It’s apparent that having so many examples of young players who have improved at Sunderland over the past year has been helpful. Amad Diallo’s loan move from Manchester United last season is one such instance of Mowbray working closely with a young player to advance their career.
As a forward who joined Sunderland in the penultimate week of the transfer window, Nazariy Rusyn has competition from Luis Hemir, Eliezer Mayenda, and other forwards. Burstow’s first objective is to establish himself in Sunderland’s starting lineup.
All of Sunderland’s newcomers will have time to adjust during the international break, and Mowbray is eager to see what Burstow can provide.
In addition to thanking his mother, who was also on the conversation, he stated, “I thanked him for choosing us.” “I believe he desired to do it. I’m hoping he’ll be as enthusiastic as he seems and come play.
He appears to be a fantastic athlete and young man. We’re eager to get him outside, and we’re hoping he’ll take advantage of some opportunities we set up along the way.
