Sandro Tonali, a Newcastle United midfielder, is likely to play his old club AC Milan tomorrow night after being rested against Brentford.
The £52m summer signing suffered a thigh injury while on international duty, forcing him to miss Italy’s 2-1 Euro 2024 qualifier win over Ukraine last Tuesday.
Tonali did not train with his Magpies colleagues before the game against Brentford, but he was on the bench as Callum Wilson’s 64th-minute penalty secured a 1-0 victory.
Tonali was not used by Magpies head coach Eddie Howe in the goal of having him ready for tomorrow night’s Champions League showdown at the San Siro.
“Sandro didn’t train with us, he had a scan and a clearance session and came through that [on Friday], but we were only going to use him in an emergency,” Howe explained.
When asked if Tonali will be considered for Milan, Howe said, “I hope so.” It was part of our decision not to risk him today until absolutely necessary in order to keep him available for the next round of games.”
The 23-year-old returns to his old club just two months after leaving. Tonali is giving a press conference this evening to preview the game.
With Joe Willock and Joelinton ruled out for the next three weeks, he might retake his starting spot right away.
