The highly regarded head coach of Sunderland’s under-18 team was due to leave for Championship rivals Southampton, according to the Echo last month.

According to the Echo, former player Lee Cattermole and Sunderland held preliminary negotiations about the post of under-18s head coach.
Following his retirement as a player in 2020, the 35-year-old was named as the head coach of Middlesbrough’s under-18s team in January last year. Cattermole, on the other hand, left his work in Teesside in February and has been without a stable job since.
However, it is understood that Cattermole and Sunderland have mutually agreed not to proceed beyond their initial discussions.
