Everton’s triumph at Brentford on Saturday was unusual in several ways.
Not only did they score three goals, win away from home – in London, no less – and dominate practically the whole game, but they were also able to rely on their substitutes to have an impact on the game.
After strikes from Abdoulaye Doucoure and James Tarkowski put the Blues up 2-1, it was up to Dominic Calvert-Lewin to round out a strong team performance.
Arnaut Danjuma came in late in the game, while Nathan Patterson and new summer acquisition Youssef Chermiti were left on the bench. After naming only five outfield substitutes on the bench against Sheffield United earlier in the season, the squad appears to be getting stronger.
Some of the peripheral players will want to make an impression when Everton go to Aston Villa in the League Cup on Wednesday.
Of course, the Blues will want to build on their victory on Saturday. But, with Luton looming on Saturday, you expect that adjustments will be made for the journey to the Midlands.
However, Jordan Pickford started in goal against Doncaster Rovers in the previous round.
In defense, Nathan Patterson will start at right-back, and while it may be tempting to give Michael Keane some minutes, his collapse in the league match at Villa Park is a clear warning flag. James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite have worked effectively together, and here is an opportunity to strengthen that bond.
Due to a paucity of choices in midfield, the center trio will likely appear identical, with veteran Idrissa Gueye missing out. Changes could be made on the flanks, with Danjuma ready to start and Jack Harrison perhaps making his debut after returning to Under 21 action last week.
Calvert-Lewin had a horrific cheek injury the last time he started for Villa, and he will be hoping for a better showing this time around, with Beto set to get a rest following a great exertion at the point of attack on Saturday.
