According to talkSPORT’s Sam Matterface, no one could have foreseen Everton’s Premier League victory over Brentford.
After the Toffees overcame the Bees 3-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday (23 September), pundit Perry Groves agreed with the judgment.
The win was the Merseyside club’s first of the Premier League season, and it moved them up to 15th in the rankings.
Matterface said on talkSPORT’s Premier League All Access Podcast, “Everton got their first victory of the season by beating Brentford 3-1.” Everton put up an excellent performance, which I must say surprised me.”
“I don’t think anyone did, to be honest, especially when you look at Everton’s performance against Arsenal, where they were unbelievably passive,” Groves responded. Then they go to Brentford, who have an excellent home record.”
A huge victory
The win in West London is huge for Sean Dyche and his team, not least because it moves the club out of the relegation zone.
However, maybe more crucially in these early stages, it will boost the Toffees’ confidence enormously.
Confidence levels at the club have been quite low in recent years, partly because their troubles have persisted into the new season after they narrowly survived relegation to the Championship not just last time around but also in the previous season.
Although there is still much work to be done behind the scenes, the manager should be pleased with his players’ performance against a good Brentford side.
The Bees haven’t had the ideal start to the season, but going to their home stadium and producing a performance like that is a huge statement.
