The contentious penalty handed to Luton Town against Wolves on Saturday is still being debated.
Wanderers and Hatters tied 1-1 at Kenilworth Road.
Many Wolves supporters, though, remain disappointed.
While Wolves did not play well at all, they had a chance to take all three points after a sensational goal from Pedro Neto.
However, after a ‘handball’ by Joao Gomes, referee Josh Smith awarded a penalty to Luton.
However, the ball in from Issa Kabore touched Gomes’ leg before deflecting up onto Gomes’ outstretched arm.
Details of what Smith said to the Wolves players on the field at the moment have now emerged…
Referee Josh Smith saw the ball strike Joao Gomes’ leg and called a penalty.
On Saturday, The Athletic made an intriguing assertion concerning the choice.
Some speculated that Smith missed the original deflection off Gomes’ leg before the ball hit his arm.
But this did not appear to be the case.
According to The Athletic, Smith told the Wolves players that he saw the ricochet but awarded the penalty because Gomes’ arm was in an uncomfortable posture.
Those in favor of the move have argued that the change in trajectory caused by the deflection was ultimately unimportant. Because Gomes did not ‘play’ with the ball
The cross was ‘deflected’ by it.
This comes after Mario Lemina stated that Smith was adamant it was a ‘clear penalty’.
Gomes should not have received a penalty for his block.
Gomes produced a terrific block against Kabore but was penalized for it.
Because of the blocking action, his arm had to be extended. It was an organic movement.
The ball only struck it because it cannoned up off his leg.
It is completely absurd that a penalty should be imposed for anything like this.
The massive uproar demonstrates that it is incorrect.
