Harvey Barnes”substantial’ foot injury has been confirmed by Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe, ruling out a call-up to the upcoming Scotland squad for the time being.
In the English Premier League’s 8-0 thrashing of Sheffield United on Sunday, Barnes sustained the injury. After just 12 minutes of play, the winger was replaced, and Howe thinks the 25-year-old will spend a significant amount of time on the bench. Barnes may have a better future on the international scene if he switches his allegiance from England to Scotland, according to rumours that surfaced just a few weeks ago.
Steve Clarke, the head of the Tartan Army, has already spoken with Barnes about a prospective switch, but the former Kilmarnock manager emphasised the ball is in Barnes’ court and he won’t pursue him. Barnes won’t be representing Scotland or England any time soon, however, as Magpies manager Howe informed the media of his player’s injury this morning.
According to Howe, the damage is to his foot just below the toe and is pretty serious. After having the scans, we are now awaiting a specialist’s advice on what to do next and if surgery is necessary or not.
“I don’t think it was a tackle. I think it was just pushing off to run. Since I lack the medical credentials to do so, I won’t get too technical. However, it is quite unusual.
