The absurdity of the situation is that Ryan Sessegnon might not now play for Tottenham Hotspur if it weren’t for his most recent injury. Sessegnon, who had been mostly ignored by Antonio Conte, was one of the players predicted to go last summer when new head coach Ange Postecoglou reorganised the team to accommodate his particular brand of aggressive strategy. However, Sess had a surgically necessary injury during preseason practise in early July, putting a stop to any potential news.
Sami Mokbel of the Mail reports that he will soon make a comeback. Sess has reportedly began light on-field training as he works to recover before the year’s end, according to Mokbel.
Is it, as the tweet states, a “major boost”? Most likely not, but it presents a chance for a player who sorely needs one to experience another redemption arc. As a left back, Sess has struggled for a long time with both confidence issues and recurrent ailments, alternating at times between stellar performances and catastrophe courses. Despite having many supporters, he hasn’t quite lived up to his promise since joining Spurs from Fulham in 2019 at the age of 19. He was a highly regarded young English player at the time, but he hasn’t quite reached his full potential since then. However, he possesses the physical attributes to be a productive inverted fullback as well as a rotation or relief option for Destiny Udogie. It will be intriguing to see if he can adjust to Ange-tactics.
We won’t see him for a time, despite that. It will be weeks before he is back up to anything close to fitness, according to Mokbel, and the club has not established a schedule for his comeback. The Spurs physiotherapists are being especially cautious with his recovery to prevent re-injury.
Having stated that, I’m interested in Sess. He most likely needs a lucky streak because he has the physical aptitude to succeed in ange-ball. It seems like a decent idea to give him some playing time during the busy schedule of games that will follow Christmas, or even earlier if there are openings for late-game substitutions.
It’s wonderful news nonetheless. Many supporters may be prepared to write off Sessegnon, but given all the changes the team has through recently, it seems like it would be worthwhile for Ange to put an arm over his shoulder and see what he can accomplish before Sessegnon makes a decision about his future.
