THE VERDICT: Why Sunderland coach decided against signing Chelsea pair

Sunderland youth coach John Hewitson has stated that the club decided not to sign many trialists this summer.
Sunderland scouted a few players while weighing their options. However, none of them were able to secure a contract at the Stadium of Light in the end.

Silko Thomas, 18, was one of the Black Cats’ targets after leaving Chelsea, along with former Blackpool defender Bobby Bjork and Swedish teenager Gideon Granstrom.

According to the Sunderland Echo, Hewitson stated, “The club chose not to pursue, and the boys chose to go elsewhere.” It’s simply one of those things; that was something we looked at; we tried several approaches, but it just didn’t work. We go on and look at other individuals, and it’s just one of those things.”

Following his loan spell at Sunderland, Thomas has been signed by fellow Championship club Leicester City. He rose through the Chelsea academy system.

During his stay at Stamford Bridge, the Jamaican-born man was a fixture for the Blues at various youth levels. He never made a senior appearance, though, and was released at the end of the previous season.

Bjork parted ways with Blackpool following their relegation to League One last season. When his contract at Bloomfield Road expired at the end of June, the Seasiders made the difficult choice not to extend it.

Sunderland return to action on Friday as they travel to Sheffield Wednesday. The Black Cats were defeated 1-0 at home by Cardiff City last time out and will be looking to rebound at Hillsborough.
