The Celtics have agreed to terms with former Milwaukee Bucks player Jrue Holiday, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Holiday, a multi-time All-Star and All-Defensive First Teamer, is traded to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Robert Williams III, Malcolm Brogdon, a 2024 Golden State Warriors First Round pick, and a 2029 unprotected Boston Celtics First Round pick.
Holiday was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers earlier this week in the deal that sent Damian Lillard to the Milwaukee Bucks. However, Wojnarowski stated that Holiday would be quickly shopped to a number of suitors as Portland sought to rebuild around its young guard core.
With the now-reloaded Bucks looming, the Celtics reportedly wanted Holiday to boost their already fearsome lineup after Lillard was moved to Milwaukee. Holiday, together with Derrick White, will form one of the NBA’s most powerful defensive backcourts in recent memory.
Holiday, a career 16.4 point-per-game scorer, is widely regarded as one of the league’s most underappreciated players. He was the second-best player on a team that won the NBA Finals just two years ago.
By dealing Williams, the Celtics lose major depth in their center rotation, leaving Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford as the team’s only true big men. Brogdon was allegedly dissatisfied with the Celtics organization after almost being moved to the Clippers earlier this offseason, so his inclusion in the trade is not surprising.
