Last Sunday, the Celtics made an aggressive move by trading for Jrue Holiday, but they also lost a talented young center.
Boston sent the Trail Blazers Robert Williams III, Malcolm Brogdon, and two first-round selections in exchange for Jrue Holiday, who Portland got from the Milwaukee Bucks in the Damian Lillard trade.
The Celtics’ acquisition of Holiday put them in a tie for the Eastern Conference title with the Bucks, and it was a calculated risk for president of basketball operations Brad Stevens, who will have to hope that the loss of Williams doesn’t come back to bite them in the future.
Williams made his first comments following the move, and there don’t appear to be any resentment from the Time Lord, who turns 26 on October 17.
“You just realize it’s a business,” Williams said of the deal, according to team video. “Obviously, we’re approaching another fantastic opportunity.” Great team, great players, and a fantastic coaching staff. It’s been a fantastic energy since I arrived, man. So I’m quite excited.”
Williams continued, when asked if he was disappointed by the deal, “I mean, I feel like everybody is when that first trade happens.” As I previously stated, I’m quite satisfied knowing it’s a business. Always had a soft spot for those guys on that side. “And now for new beginnings.”
Williams was eager to share his wisdom with a new, younger team as he transitions to a new atmosphere with a rebuilding team, as opposed to the Celtics, who are focused on winning the NBA title.
