The Celtics announced the signing of center/forward Wenyen Gabriel in a news release.
Gabriel, 26, spent last season with the Lakers and provided some underappreciated and valuable minutes at times. He averaged 5.5 points and 4.2 rebounds in 68 games. In Boston, he will be given every opportunity to fill the vacuum left by Williams, who was traded to the Trail Blazers in exchange for veteran guard Jrue Holiday.
Gabriel has also spent time with the Clippers, Nets, Trail Blazers, and Kings since entering the NBA in 2019 after graduating from Kentucky. He was born in Khartoum, Sudan.
The contract’s terms have not been disclosed, although it is anticipated to be for one year at the veteran’s minimum.
Gabriel wants to be a consistent part of a big man rotation that includes Al Horford, Kristaps Porzingis, and possibly Oshae Brissett, Lamar Stevens, and Luke Kornet.
