Many eyes will be on former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso’s success at Bayer Leverkusen, but there is one more Anfield veteran worth keeping an eye on in the future.
Fabrizio Romano spoke on X on Wednesday morning to reveal an agreement between Bordeaux and NK Celje for Albert Riera, who has signed a contract to become the French club’s new head coach.
The now 41-year-old joins after managing Celje in Slovenia for just over three months, with the post in Ligue 2 evidently too appealing to pass up.
A Liverpool manager in the making?
Make no mistake, Riera has a long way to go before earning the same kind of praise as Alonso, who is now linked with Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Liverpool.
Despite this, the Spaniard has had a promising start to his senior coaching career, overseeing 11 wins from 17 games in the PRVA Liga and Europa Conference qualifiers, averaging 2.12 points per game.
With all due respect to Slovenia’s top level, we believe French football will be a greater test of his coaching ability.
Who can say? If Riera can maintain his upward coaching trajectory, we may be talking about him as a potential Jurgen Klopp successor in the coming years.
