Sandro Tonali of Newcastle United was the fastest player during the second round of Champions League group games last week.
Following a goalless draw with AC Milan at the San Siro, the Magpies upset French champions Paris Saint-Germain with a 4-1 victory at St James’ Park.
Miguel Almiron gave the Magpies the lead early on, and Geordie defender Dan Burn made it 2-0 before halftime.
Sean Longstaff, a North Shields native, put United up 3-0 shortly after the break. PSG’s Lucas Hernandez pulled one back, but Fabian Schar finished an unforgettable night with a 25-yard strike during injury time.
Newcastle’s biggest-ever Champions League triumph came in their first home game in the competition in 20 years.
If you’d bet on any player recording a high speed on Tyneside, you’d bet on Kylian Mbappe, right? Eat your heart out, Kylian, for that little honor goes to Tonali.
According to the Champions League’s official X account, the Italian reached a high speed of 35.5km/h, placing him ahead of AC Milan’s
Christian Pulisic and Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund.
Mbappe was sixth on the list, with a speed of 34.4km/h. Tonali was followed by Benfica’s David Neres at 35.4km/h.
Tonali was not a name that many Newcastle supporters associated with speed, but the midfielder was able to get up to maximum speed to assist Newcastle secure a historic victory.
