The Italian police have questioned Newcastle United player Sandro Tonali and Aston Villa midfielder Nicol2 Zaniolo in connection with charges of unlawful betting.
Both had been on international duty but had departed Italy’s training camp after consulting with authorities on Thursday afternoon.
They will now return to Newcastle and Aston Villa, respectively, and will not feature in Italy’s upcoming EURO qualifier against England.
The Italian Federation has now issued a statement in response to the allegations of unlawful betting:
â€oeThe Federation announces that, in the late afternoon of today, the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Turin notified footballers Sandro Tonali and Nicol2 Zaniolo, who are now meeting with the national team at the Federal Technical Center of Coverciano, of investigative activities.
â€Regardless of the nature of the acts, given that the two players are not in the required condition to meet the commitments set in the coming days, the Federation has decided to allow them to return to their respective clubsâ€.
