It’s unclear where the hunt is at the moment. Nonetheless, the senior Pompey official stated that the vacancy will allow him to examine the current footballing system. That means whoever is hired will assist ensure the Blues are even better prepared for future recruitment processes.

‘We’ve started the process,’ Hughes added, explaining how all parties inside the club have reacted to Boardman’s probable exit.

‘Even though he knew he was going to Everton, Phil hasn’t changed at all – he’s still working incredibly hard for us.

‘He’s been here six years, and this is a good step for him.’It also provides us with an excellent opportunity to restructure and develop. Whenever there has been a change in staff, we have first looked at the structure – we need to ensure that we are adequately prepared not just for the next three months, but also for the next three years.

‘We’re continuously striving to improve and looking for methods to strengthen departments.’

Earlier this month, John Mousinho conceded that replacing the’massively influential’ Boardman would be difficult. But he was convinced Hughes would find the right person to take over.

‘Since I came in January, I’ve worked very, very closely with him, and he was a huge part of what we managed to get done in the summer,’ he said.

‘We’ve brought some outstanding players to the football club, and Phil’s had a big influence in that; he’s very good at what he does. In some respects, it’s not surprising that he was signed by a Premier League club.

‘We clearly have a job on our hands finding (a replacement), but we’ll make sure we do it well. There is no space for sentiment; we must move on, and we must move quickly.’
