GOOD NEWS: Portsmouth chief answers critical question over January transfer reinforcements with top target reveal

Pompey are looking to add to their Championship squad in January.

And Blues CEO Andy Cullen has acknowledged that the club would want to spend more money on the right players during the winter transfer window.
Cullen, on the other hand, emphasized the balance that exists in John Mousinho’s squad after a fast start to the League One season.

The Blues boss also highlighted the importance of maintaining a fluid approach to recruitment in the next year, with a number of factors still potentially coming into play.

‘There’s always ways we want to improve and add to what we’ve got,’ Cullen said on Pompey’s YouTube page when asked if there’s a budget to bolster the team in January. The recruitment staff has been working tirelessly on it.

‘The transfer window may have closed, but the recruitment never ends; we had five scouts out at games on Tuesday.

‘We should presumably provide context as well.’We discussed the plan we hope to implement for the upcoming season; we wanted to add more energy and a younger dynamic to the club.

‘We were not scared to pay transfer fees for that younger talent. People can see that we accomplished that in January with Paddy Lane and Ryley Towler, and we continued to do so during the summer by investing in young talent like Terry Devlin, Kusini Yengi, and Christian Saydee.

‘So we’re looking at that, but we’ve got a really nice balance through the team at the moment. In each position, you can see competition from right-back, left-back, centre-halves, midfield and Colby having good support and back-up with Chris and Kusini as well.

‘But you never know what could happen during the next three weeks, there could be injuries or different things which could happen. We’ve already decided on the posts we’d like to create.’

Cullen emphasized the need of Pompey continuing to pursue young talent who can be developed and resold as the club moves away from relying on loan players.

‘I believe it’s vital to recognize that we don’t want our recruitment to be temporary,’ he continued. It has to be for the future and seeking to reduce dependency on borrowing, as we did throughout the summer and last January timeframe.

‘It has to broaden the pool of youthful talent accessible in the squad, complementing the experience we have.’ and getting the balance right is hugely important to us.

‘So it will heavily influence how we approach January, but we want to look at every opportunity to enhance and strengthen the squad, and January represents that opportunity as well.’
