GOOD TRADE: Detroit Pistons are advancing in talks to land 6-foot-9 defender in a buy-low trade

This season, the Detroit Pistons will attempt to enhance their roster in a variety of ways.

They have any available roster place to sign players outright, but they are more likely to make a trade at some time due to the fact that they have up to seven expiring contracts, not all of them are part of the future plans.

They could still use additional depth at forward and a 6-foot-9 defender capable of blocking 3-point shots. Who wouldn’t be able to?

Those types of athletes are hard to come by, therefore the Detroit Pistons may have to take a chance on an unproven player with those skills.

Reports: No. 10 pick Ziaire Williams heading to Grizzlies | NBA.com

The Memphis Grizzlies may have one available.

The Detroit Pistons may consider Ziaire Williams as a buy-low option.
The Memphis Grizzlies traded for Ziaire Williams’ draft rights in the 2021 NBA Draft, while the New Orleans Pelicans received Trey Murphy III in exchange, a player who has been significantly superior to Williams.

But he is a 22-year-old who hasn’t received much of a shot on a loaded Grizzlies team that has been attempting to win titles rather than develop young talent. Williams has only played 99 games in two seasons, largely as a fill-in.

Memphis will be aiming for it again this season, so it’s unclear where Williams slots in, despite a solid preseason:

I disagree that Memphis is deep on the wing, but Williams is an intriguing target for any club in need of forward depth because he is 6-foot-8, can play on the wing, has shown defensive potential, and his outside shooting has improved.

He could simply be a player in need of more playing time, which he will most likely get with the Detroit Pistons. He only has one team option remaining on his contract after this season, so any team that acquires him would be in a position to keep him or let him go penalty-free if things don’t work out.

2023 NBA Free Agency- Detroit Pistons pick up Alec Burks' $10.5 million team option for 2023-24 season

The problem is that the Pistons don’t have a contract that matches what the Grizzlies require, so something like this would have to be done on the cheap.

If the Pistons don’t see Alec Burks as a long-term solution, he’s a man who might be of interest to Memphis as a bench shooter, and if Detroit can obtain a young forward with upside, it might be worth the risk.

For the time being, the Grizzlies and Pistons appear pleased with what they have, but Ziaire Williams is a name to keep an eye on this season, even if he is not a regular in the rotation.
