Newcastle is understandably astonished and stunned by the disclosures, but has made no remark as of yet.

Tonali, 23, was included in an Italian football betting probe last week and was left out of the senior men’s squad for last night’s loss to England.

According to Sky Sports News, at his hearing on Tuesday, he admitted to betting on matches in which he played and did not play for money.

According to FIFA Code 26, such behavior might result in a three-year ban from international football.

Tonali is likely to face a lighter, but still lengthy ban in exchange for his assistance with the inquiry – and for confessing his guilt.
