Michael Fulmer, a former Detroit Tigers pitcher, will miss the 2024 season after having surgery on his right elbow on Wednesday.
According to the Chicago Cubs, Fulmer, a right-handed reliever, had UCL revision surgery on his right elbow.
On August 25, Fulmer was placed on the injured list. Fulmer was placed on the injured list again after temporarily returning to the mound due to forearm discomfort. Fulmer appeared in 58 games, including one start as the starter, and had two saves with three blown saves.
He had a 4.42 earned run average but pitched well before going on the disabled list. Fulmer struck out 37 batters in 33 2/3 innings with a 1.60 earned run average from May 28 to August 18.
Fulmer, 30, is an unrestricted free agent.
Fulmer was acquired by the Tigers in a trade deadline deal with the New York Mets in 2015, along with pitcher Luis Cessa, in exchange for Yoenis Cespedes.
When Fulmer made his Major League debut in 2016, he was named American League Rookie of the Year. In 26 starts, Fulmer was 11-7 with a 3.06 ERA. In 2017, he was named to the AL All-Star team after going 10-12 with a 3.83 ERA.
Fulmer had arm issues and was moved to the Detroit bullpen. Fulmer was 32-43 with a 3.90 ERA and 16 saves in his Tigers career.
The Tigers traded Fulmer to the Minnesota Twins during the 2022 trade deadline in exchange for pitcher Sawyer Gipson-Long, who made his MLB debut in 2023. Gipson-Long was 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA in four games with the Tigers. He struck out 26 batters while allowing 14 hits.
After the 2022 season, Fulmer became a free agent and signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the Chicago Cubs.
