TRADE WRAP: Sixers have announced the signing of NBA top guard in ideal James Harden replacement amid his trade drama

The biggest storyline surrounding the Philadelphia 76ers as the 2023-24 NBA season begins this week is the James Harden trade scandal. Harden had demanded a trade over the offseason, with the Los Angeles Clippers being his favorite destination. Those conversations appear to have stopped, and while Harden initially went to training camp, he did not play in any preseason games and has since been absent from the team. Harden seems increasingly likely to be on the Sixers’ roster when the regular season begins. According to Adrian Wojnarowski, the Sixers signed Javonte Smart to a two-way contract to improve their guard depth.

Javonte Smart had signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Sixers and was therefore unlikely to make the opening night roster. Smart, who is on a two-way contract, will only play 50 games for the Sixers before joining the Delaware Blue Coats in the G League.
Smart went undrafted in the NBA Draft in 2021. He signed a two-way contract with the Milwaukee Bucks for the 2021-22 season, but was released before the season ended. The Miami Heat signed him to a two-way contract that season but released him in the offseason. Smart spent last season with the Birmingham Squadron in the G League.
