DEAL AGREED: Cowboys set to finalize a Blockbuster Trade for $95 Million Star before NFL trade deadline day

As the NFL trade deadline approaches on October 31, 2023, the Dallas Cowboys rumors are heating up. It remains to be seen whether Cowboys fans will get pranks or treats on Halloween. The front staff would be waiting for calls from other clubs, according to owner Jerry Jones.

The Athletic’s Jon Machota has compiled a list of probable players that could force the Cowboys to make a “over-the-top” move. Aaron Donald, the Rams’ star defensive lineman, is one of the most intriguing names on the list. While admitting it is a “highly unlikely” move, the NFL analyst suggested Dallas should “kick the tires” on whether Los Angeles might part ways with Donald.

“Los Angeles would probably want a lot more than the Cowboys are willing to offer,” Machota speculated on October 25. “This is extremely unlikely.” But it’s worth kicking the tires at the very least. Donald is one of the game’s all-time best defenders.

“The 32-year-old is coming off making his ninth Pro Bowl. In seven games this season, he has 2 1/2 sacks, eight tackles for loss, and ten QB hits. The Rams are unlikely to be able to obtain more for him than they are presently. Placing Donald in the middle of the Cowboys’ defense would immediately improve everyone.”

Donald earns a modest salary, but his cap burden is significant due to his three-year, $95 million contract that runs until the 2024 season. The nine-time Pro Bowler will earn $13.5 million in 2023 and will have a $26 million cap charge.

Los Angeles has an out in Donald’s contract this summer, and removing the star may result in a $33.5 million dead cap charge. If the Rams decide to part ways with Donald, the pass rusher still has trade value. Even if the team wanted to start over, it makes little sense for LA to release Donald.

According to Spotrac, Donald’s salary is $10 million, with a $34.1 million cap hit in 2024. This makes it even more difficult for the Cowboys, who need to sign contract extensions for players like Micah Parsons, CeeDee Lamb, and Dak Prescott.
Jones’ comments on the deadline seem contradictory, but this is not the first time the Cowboys owner has misled fans about a potential trade. Jones hinted at a possible move before of the 2022 trade deadline. Despite this, little was done with the acquisition of defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins.

“I would really extend to improve our team right now, so that gives you an idea because I think we’ve got a contender,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan’s “Shan & RJ” on October 24. “So, right now, would I do something that would take away from this team in order for it to help us in the future?” Most likely not.”

During his 11 starts last season, Donald has 49 tackles, 11 quarterback hits, 10 tackles for loss, and 5 sacks. It may be a long shot, but Donald would considerably strengthen the Dallas defense’s troubled middle. Despite Jones’ perplexing statements, Cowboys speculations are certain to persist in the run-up to the trade deadline.
