The NFL trade deadline is less than a week away, and teams are preparing for one of the busiest deadlines in recent years. Another intriguing aspect of this year’s deadline is that the Falcons are in a position to purchase rather than sell.
Atlanta has sole possession of first place in the NFC South after defeating Tampa Bay, and could aim to improve the defensive front in preparation for a postseason run. In order of least probable to most likely, here are a few prospective Falcons targets.
DE Vikings’ Danielle Hunter
I understand Falcons fans’ desire for Hunter, who is proven to be one of the top pass rushers in 2023, but it’s exceedingly improbable. He’ll be the most sought-after prospective trade candidate, and Atlanta isn’t one Danielle Hunter away from winning the Super Bowl, which should be used to judge every choice. That being said, it’s possible that the Falcons sign Hunter, but only with the purpose of giving him the substantial contract extension that he’s seeking. Our next two candidates are in the same boat.
Commanders DE Montez Sweat and Chase Young
Because of Kyle Smith’s ties to Washington, this appears more likely than Hunter. Sweat and Young may be on the move before the trade deadline. Given the compensatory selections they’re likely to receive if they split up in free agency, the Falcons will have to make it worthwhile for the Commanders. Regardless of compensation, the same may be said for Hunter in this circumstance. The Falcons should not call Martin Mayhew unless they intend to extend Sweat or Young’s contracts.
