The Carolina Panthers made it apparent during the NFL trade deadline that they are ready for a rebuild. The team sacked head coach Matt Rhule and traded star running back Christian McCaffrey for future draft picks. However, it appeared that the Panthers were adamant about keeping edge rusher Brian Burns.
This was not due to a lack of interest or offers for Brian Burns. Many teams would love to utilize his pass-rushing abilities. The Los Angeles Rams, according to NFL expert Jonathan Jones, offered a big deal for Burns.
According to Jones, the Rams offered the Panthers two first-round picks and a second-round pick in exchange for Brian Burns, but the Panthers declined. The first-round picks were for the NFL Drafts in 2024 and 2025, respectively, while the second-round pick was in 2023.
That’s a tremendous offer to turn down, especially considering the Panthers are in the midst of a rebuild. However, the Panthers declined the trade because they supposedly do not believe they can replace his production anytime soon.
Edge rushers are extremely valuable in the NFL. Carolina believes she has an excellent one. As a result, they don’t want to lose one. Those picks, however, could have been important for other crucial positions as well as a fresh edge.
According to Jones, the fact that Carolina did not move Brian Burns indicates that they want to offer him a contract extension. As a result, he becomes a long-term presence on the team’s defense around whom they can build.
Brian Burns is set to become one of the NFL’s highest-paid edge rushers.
Carolina let go of two assistant coaches.
Carolina has chosen to let two more assistant coaches go. Steve Wilks, the interim head coach, opted to split ways with Paul Pasqualoni and Evan Cooper. This comes on the heels of a humiliating loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Both of these assistants had close relationships to Matt Rhule, so it’s not shocking to see changes here. This season, the Panthers have sacked five coaches, including Rhule. The majority of these coaches have previously worked on the defensive side of the ball.
