DONE DEAL: RAMS are pleased to announced the signing of another Key player after the NFL deadline day

As previously reported, Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford suffered a UCL sprain in his thumb against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday and is officially listed as “day-to-day.” What will the Rams do at quarterback if Stafford is out for an extended period of time? Head coach Sean McVay discussed the situation earlier this week, leaving open the possibility of signing another signal caller to help offset some of the loss on the field. “Yeah, that’s a safe assumption,” McVay said.

Indeed, it appears that L.A. tried to sign John Wolford, but he’s staying in Tampa Bay, leaving Dresser Winn, who was in training camp with the team, as the new top candidate.

McVay also provided an update on quarterback Stetson Bennett, whom the team acquired from the Georgia Bulldogs in the 2023 NFL Draft. Could Bennett, who won national championships with Georgia in college, be a viable option to fill in for the injured Stafford? In a nutshell, probably not.

“Yeah, he’s doing well,” McVay said of Bennett. “I would say there have been no updates regarding his return to us. I’m not ready to say he won’t be back with us this year at all, but it’s probably less likely than it would be.”

In the NFL, the phrase “day-to-day” can mean a variety of things, but in Stafford’s case, it appears to be accurate. The Rams have not indicated a timetable for his return to the field, and everything is dependent on how quickly his thumb heals. “Yeah, I think it’s exclusively a result of how quickly that thumb turns over,” McVay went on to say. “There is clearly some swelling and bruising. It’s an important component of being able to throw the football. This is a previous injury, so there is some scar tissue, so there are a lot of variables.

“It’s really about let’s see what happens over the next 24 to 48 hours in regard to just all of those things that I had kind of previously mentioned.” Despite the fact that Stafford has previously suffered from this injury, McVay stated that the Rams are not concerned about it recurring this season or in the future.
