The Los Angeles Rams do not wish to repeat the 2022 season, including the need to place their starting quarterback on injured reserve. Rams head coach Sean McVay remains optimistic that the team will not have to play a single game without Matthew Stafford, and there was some positive news about his hand injury on Wednesday: Stafford will not be placed on injured reserve, according to the head coach, and he might play against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.
In comparison to McVay’s comments on Sunday that the injury didn’t look good and on Monday that IR was a possibility, this is practically the best news possible.
Stafford missed half of 2019 due to a back ailment and the first half of 2022 due to a variety of injuries. In truth, the Rams quarterback was hurt in multiple places against the Dallas Cowboys, but he was eventually replaced by Brett Rypien after injuring his thumb on a two-point conversion grab.
If the Rams are forced to place Stafford on injured reserve, it will effectively end the 2023 season. Instead, the Rams are fighting for every ounce of playing time they can get out of Stafford, and if he is able to go this week, he will also have a bye week before the next game to rest.
Brett Rypien is still the team’s backup quarterback, Dresser Winn was signed to the practice squad on Wednesday, and Stetson Bennett is unlikely to return in 2023.
