Josh McDaniels had lost the locker room before his final game against the Lions, and he was fired the next day.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, players and assistant coaches ripped into McDaniels at a team meeting on the Thursday before the Lions game, five days before McDaniels was fired.
Players complained to McDaniels about his long team meetings, his tendency to overcorrect every mistake, and his tendency to blame players for issues with play calling.
According to the report, McDaniels was a shell of his former self at the Raiders’ next practice, hours after that team meeting, and acted more like a bystander than a head coach.
According to the report, Raiders owner Mark Davis had been meeting with players, including Josh Jacobs and Davante Adams, and had learned many of the issues raised by the players to McDaniels at the team meeting through those meetings.
It was a dysfunctional situation that resulted in McDaniels’ dismissal midway through his second season — for the second time in his career.
