JUST IN: Canes head coach Mario Cristobal issues an important injury update on Emory Williams and fresh update on key duo

QB Emory Williams suffered a compound arm fracture against Florida State on Saturday, according to Matt Shodell of CaneSport. Williams will miss the rest of the season, but he is expected to be ready when the Miami Dolphins begin spring practice.

Williams suffered the compound arm fracture while running for a first down on Miami’s final drive against Florida State to keep the Hurricanes alive. Williams was injured on fourth and two. Williams scrambled to his left, stretched out for the first down, and injured his arm.

Williams went 8-23 for 175 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions against Florida State. Williams will finish the season with 44 completions in 71 attempts for 470 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. Miami’s only two healthy scholarship quarterbacks are Jacurri Brown and Tyler Van Dyke.

Williams will be able to participate in spring practice if surgery and rehab go as planned, according to Shodell. Williams’ arm was cast on the field and he was taken to the hospital before flying back to Miami with the Hurricanes. Williams will undergo surgery on Monday.

On Saturday, Williams appeared in his fifth game. To keep their redshirt, players can play in four games. With Williams out for the rest of the season, Van Dyke is expected to start against Louisville on Saturday. Brown can play in all three of Miami’s remaining games this season while keeping his redshirt.

The loss of Williams creates an intriguing offseason for Miami at quarterback. Van Dyke is nearing the end of his fourth season with the Miami Hurricanes and will have the option of returning to the team, entering the NFL Draft, or transferring. Brown could return to Miami after a redshirt season or enter the transfer portal.

Quarterback change not enough for visiting Miami Hurricanes against undefeated Florida State Seminoles

Judd Anderson, a three-star quarterback in 2024, has committed to Miami. With so much uncertainty at QB on the 2024 roster, Miami could bring in a transfer signal caller. D’Eriq King, a transfer quarterback from Houston, was the Hurricanes’ last addition. King had a fantastic 2020 season.
