After becoming a free agent last week, long-time Detroit Tigers minor-leaguer Jack O’Loughlin didn’t have to look far for a new home.
The 23-year-old Australian native agreed to a minor-league contract with the Oakland Athletics that includes a spring training invitation.
O’Loughlin’s agent told Oakland broadcaster Jessica Kleinschimdt that he had offers from 15 major league teams.
O’Loughlin has been with the Tigers since he was a teenager in 2016.
After a strong performance at Class (A) advanced West Michigan, he was promoted directly to Triple-A Toledo this summer.
The aggressive promotion suggested that he could be a candidate for the 40-man roster. Instead, the Tigers let him become a free agent.
His youth and extensive minor-league experience made him an appealing free-agent option.
In other news, former Tigers right-hander Drew Carlton has signed a minor-league contract with the San Diego Padres.
In 20 2/3 innings for the Padres in 2023, Carlton was 2-1 with a 4.35 ERA. Before going on the disabled list, he struck out 18 and walked six.
Carlton, 28, is a Lakeland, Fla. native who was drafted by the Tigers in the 32nd round out of Florida State in 2017.
His youth and extensive minor-league experience made him an appealing free-agent option.
In other news, former Tigers right-hander Drew Carlton has signed a minor-league contract with the San Diego Padres.
In 20 2/3 innings for the Padres in 2023, Carlton was 2-1 with a 4.35 ERA. Before going on the disabled list, he struck out 18 and walked six.
Carlton, 28, is a Lakeland, Fla. native who was drafted by the Tigers in the 32nd round out of Florida State in 2017.
