The Montreal PWHL team has signed defender Erin Ambrose, their first-round draft pick in the 2023 PWHL Draft. Ambrose was selected sixth overall and signed a three-year deal.
“Ambrose is a very smart player who plays with tremendous poise along the blue line,” general manager Danièle Sauvageau said. “She will impact our team right away with the style she plays and the experience she brings.”
Ambrose’s status is uncertain after leaving Canada’s Rivalry Series game against the United States on Saturday with a lower body injury. She never returned to the game.
She will be expected to run Montreal’s power play and lead the team’s defense. The 29-year-old native of Keswick, Ontario, will be joining a Montreal team for the second time. She was traded to Les Canadiennes in 2018 and was named CWHL defender of the year in the league’s final season in 2019.
In 32 CWHL games in Montreal, she had eight goals and 30 assists. She also had a successful NCAA career at Clarkson University, where she had four goals and five assists in seven games during Canada’s gold-medal run in 2022.
At the most recent World Championship, she had seven points in seven games.
She is the fifth player in Montreal to sign a three-year contract, and the seventh overall. Each team must have at least six players under contract for three years. Training camps for the PWHL begin this week, and it was announced today that the team’s home base will be the Centre 21.02 at the Verdun Auditorium.
