Offseason moves: The Detroit Tigers sign two top prospects, shielding them from the upcoming Rule 5 Draft.
Under the direction of their team president of baseball operations, Scott Harris, the Detroit Tigers are actively shaping the 2024 edition of the team during the offseason. The Tigers have added two prospects to their 40-man roster as part of their efforts to keep them from being poached by other teams in the upcoming Rule 5 Draft.
Rule 5 Draft Explanation
For those who are unfamiliar, the MLB Rule 5 Draft, which takes place each December, allows clubs that do not have a full 40-man roster to select specific non-40-man roster players from other clubs.
The two Tigers who were promoted are both highly regarded prospects.
According to the team’s official PR X (formerly Twitter) account, the Tigers have added RHP Wilmer Flores and C Dillon Dingler to the 40-man roster.
Flores, the brother of San Francisco Giants infielder Wilmer Flores, was undrafted in 2020 and is ranked seventh overall in the Tigers’ system by MLB Pipeline, while Baseball America ranks him eighth. Last season, he split time between High-A West Michigan and Double-A Erie, posting a 4.65 ERA. He also suffered a hip injury but was able to return and play in a Sea Wolves postseason game.
In 2020, he signed as an undrafted free agent with Detroit.
Dingler, whom the Tigers selected 38th overall in the 2020 draft out of Ohio State, spent last season with Triple-A Toledo, where he hit 16 home runs and drove in 58 runs in 89 at-bats. He is currently ranked as the Tigers’ 11th-best prospect by MLB Pipeline, and 6th overall in Detroit’s system by Baseball America.
Finally, welcome to the big show.
Both players are poised to advance in their professional careers with the Tigers, having received significant recognition from the team’s management, which resulted in their elevation to the roster to protect them from potential acquisitions by other teams.
We wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors and look forward to seeing them wear the iconic Old English D insignia.
