Austin Meadows and Spencer Turnbull’s futures with the Detroit Tigers have been announced.
The Detroit Tigers announced minutes ago that they would not be tendering contracts to the following players: RHPs Brenan Hanifee, Garrett Hill, Freddy Pacheco, and Spencer Turnbull, as well as OF Austin Meadows.
The Tigers announced the news on social media.
The Tigers’ Public Relations X (formerly known as Twitter) account made the official announcement earlier this evening.
Austin Meadows’ time with the Detroit Tigers has come to an end.
Meadows was acquired by the Tigers last April in exchange for infielder Isaac Paredes and a competitive balance round B pick in the 2022 amateur draft from the Tampa Bay Rays.
Meadows came to the Tigers with the expectation of making consistent offensive contributions. The anticipation was high after a strong 2021 season with Tampa Bay, where he hit.234 with 27 home runs and a career-high 106 RBIs. His time in Detroit, however, was marred by setbacks. In 2022, he played only 36 games due to a variety of issues such as COVID-19, vertigo, Achilles tendinitis, and anxiety.
He only played in six games in 2023 before returning to the 60-Day Injured List in early April due to anxiety issues, and he hasn’t played since.
Spencer Turnbull’s nine-year tenure with the Detroit Tigers is coming to an end.
Turnbull was selected by the Tigers in the second round (63rd overall) of the 2014 MLB Draft, and he made his Major League debut in September 2018. However, it was in 2021 that he cemented his place in Tigers history by pitching the team’s eighth no-hitter against the Seattle Mariners.
He leaves Detroit with a 12-29 record, 255 strikeouts, and a 4.80 ERA.
Bottom line: Best wishes to the now-defunct Tigers.
Some Tigers fans may be disappointed with the trade that sent Paredes to the Rays in exchange for Meadows. Meadows, on the other hand, struggled to find his groove with Detroit. Meanwhile, Turnbull’s incredible feat of pitching a no-hitter has assured his place in Tigers history, leaving an indelible imprint regardless of other trade outcomes.
We wish Meadows and Turnbull the best of luck in their future baseball endeavors, as well as Hanifee, Pacheco, and Hill.
