The Detroit Lions are off to their best start since 2014, posting a 7-2 record under coach Dan Campbell. Despite recent developments at his alma mater, Texas A&M, where Jimbo Fisher was fired as head coach on Nov. 12, Campbell has stated unequivocally that he is committed to the Lions and has no plans to leave.
Recognizing rumors that he was considered for the vacant head-coaching position at Texas A&M, Campbell emphasized his commitment to his current position in a recent statement. “Maybe. But that’s all right. “I know some people there, and I love my school,” he said at Friday’s practice. “That’s my alma mater, and I want to help them in any way I can, including coaching for them.” So, and I will do so.”
In his third season as Lions coach, Campbell has led the team to the top of the NFC North division standings. His coaching abilities have been instrumental in Detroit’s strong performance this season.
Campbell was a standout player for the Aggies during his college years, earning a four-year letterman from 1995 to ’98 while studying agricultural development. Despite his strong ties to Texas A&M, Campbell has remained steadfast in his decision not to take on coaching duties at his alma mater.
While discussing the coaching vacancy at Texas A&M, Campbell avoided getting into specifics, emphasizing the importance of hiring someone who understands the state of Texas, is familiar with Texas A&M’s history, and has the ability to connect with young athletes. “Certainly, the hire is critical, and it must be someone who understands the state of Texas, the history of Texas A&M, and who can communicate with and develop young people.” That, I believe, is where it begins. “Strong leadership,” he said.
As the Lions prepare to face the Chicago Bears on Sunday, a win could mark their best 10-game start since 1962, demonstrating Coach Dan Campbell’s remarkable progress.
