Tommy DeVito, the Giants’ third-string quarterback, had an impressive afternoon against the Washington Commanders on Sunday, going 18-for-26 for 246 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions despite being sacked nine times.
DeVito became the first Giants quarterback in history to throw five touchdown passes in his first two starts, and he now has six touchdown passes in three games, which is more than Jets quarterback Zach Wilson has all season.
And here’s another fact DeVito might bring up on Monday: One of the opposing head coaches was fired.
Following the humiliating 31-19 loss at home to the floundering Giants, which was marred by six turnovers, Commanders’ Ron Rivera could become the second NFL coach fired this season, joining Las Vegas Raiders’ Josh McDaniels on the bench. The Commanders’ record now stands at 4-7, 1-4 at home.
The 3-8 Giants have sent a message: We’re not tanking. They might have sacked a head coach after getting four sacks.
The booing at FedEx Field was only temporarily quieted when the Commanders made a last-ditch effort to win the game, but quarterback Sam Howell threw his third interception of the game, a 54-yard pick-six by linebacker Isaiah Simmons with 16 seconds left.
