GOOD ADDITION: Chiefs Announce 2 Additions After Losing 3 Players to Injury vs. Raiders

On Saturday, November 25, the Kansas City Chiefs announced several roster moves and injuries ahead of their Week 12 game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

The main story was wide receiver Kadarius Toney’s last-minute injury absence due to a “ankle/hip” ailment, according to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero.

The Chiefs also placed wide receiver Mecole Hardman on injured reserve, ensuring a four-game absence, and promoted two players from the practice squad. Running back La’Mical Perine and wide receiver/returner Montrell Washington were both promoted.

Remember, head coach Andy Reid announced on November 24 that Kansas City would be without Hardman and running back Jerick McKinnon, giving the Chiefs offense three new injuries to deal with against the Raiders. Reid also hinted that Hardman might be out indefinitely, which we now know is correct.

In Week 12, Kansas City has six active wide receivers: Rashee Rice, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Justin Watson, Skyy Moore, Washington, and Richie James, who is expected to return.

Kadarius Toney ‘Felt Discomfort’ Ahead of Raiders Game, According to Chiefs Insider

Following the announcement that Toney would be “out” in Week 12, Chiefs Digest’s Matt Derrick provided some context on X.

“Kadarius Toney felt discomfort in his hip during practice Friday, a source tells Chiefs Digest,” he said.

“He was ruled out on Saturday and will undergo further tests,” the KC media member added. “Chiefs also elevated two practice squad players with Toney, Hardman & McKinnon out vs. Raiders.”

Chiefs release running back La'Mical Perine

It remains to be seen whether Toney’s absence will be prolonged, as it appears to be for Hardman.

The Chiefs spend their third and final pick on running back La’Mical Perine.
With McKinnon out, the Chiefs decided to use their third eligible pick on Perine. Despite never playing in the game, the fourth stringer was promoted for Week 2 against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Week 9 in Germany.

That means if Kansas City wants to use Perine again after this point, he’ll have to sign him to the active roster. If another opportunity arises, they can also promote undrafted rookie Deneric Prince.

Although he was inactive in Jacksonville, he did suit up for his second elevation against the Miami Dolphins and is expected to do so again in Week 12.

During his second game of the season, Perine ran the ball once for one yard. During his appearance, he played four offensive snaps and four special teams snaps.

Montrell Washington returns for his fifth appearance for the Chiefs in Week 12.
Washington was only promoted from the practice squad once, but he’s already played in four games for Kansas City this season.

After James was placed on injured reserve, the former Denver Broncos draft pick was signed to the 53-man roster. Following a brief release onto waivers, the Chiefs returned him to the practice squad.

Washington was only used on special teams during his first few games with Kansas City, accounting for 34 snaps.

For the Chiefs, he attempted eight punt returns and one kick return, totaling 81 all-purpose yards. This included a punt return average of 7.6 yards and a kick return of 20 yards.

It’ll be interesting to see how Dave Toub deploys James and Washington at the same time. Both specialize in punts and have never been activated together before.

“I could see Richie James at PR and Montrell Washington at KR,” predicted Arrowhead Pride reporter Pete Sweeney following the announcement. On Sunday, we’ll see if he’s correct.
