It is the end of the 2023 regular season, and the Auburn football program is once again searching the transfer portal for an experienced quarterback. That has been the case for the Tigers since Bo Nix left; no one has remained.
In 2022, it was a battle between TJ Finley and Robby Ashford, which Finley won but surrendered to Ashford several games later. This preseason, it was Finley versus Ashford versus Payton Thorne, and despite being named QB1, Thorne shared a lot of playing time with Ashford at the start of the year
.
According to Auburn Daily’s Zac Blackerby, two candidates are most likely to appear on the portal when it opens on December 4:
Holden Geriner’s presence at Auburn is valuable for depth and effectiveness during practice, so it makes sense for him to look for starting reps elsewhere.
Robby Ashford appears dissatisfied with his role. Once he graduates, Ashford is free to transfer. That will happen during the offseason. My current prediction is that Ashford will not be on the Auburn roster next season.
The room is looking pretty crowded ahead of next season, with 2024 commit Walker White joining Hank Brown, Geriner, Finley, Ashford, and Thorne.
