AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli has spoken about the formation he plans to use against Borussia Dortmund, as well as the progress of Ismael Bennacer’s recovery.
Milan ended a four-game league winless streak on Saturday night, defeating Fiorentina 1-0 thanks to Theo Hernandez’s first-half penalty, but the performance level will have to be raised tomorrow night when Borussia Dortmund visits the San Siro.
It is a crucial game in determining who advances to the Champions League knockout stages. Dortmund are top of the group after back-to-back victories over Newcastle United, and with PSG hosting the Premier League side, this is a must-win game for Milan.
Pioli spoke with SportMediaset on the eve of the match against Dortmund at San Siro, and among the more interesting questions were those about formation and Bennacer’s condition.
“In our non-possession phase, we always go above the opposition, depending on how the opposing midfielders line up.” “It’s obvious that if they’re deeper, we’ll work a little higher up,” he said (via MilanNews).
“In the build-up phase, which changes a lot, they are a very versatile team.” We’ll need to be able to read the situation well. We are up against a very vertical team that prefers depth and bringing many players onto the field over ball possession.
“They are an attacking team with the ability to leave some space. We’ll need to be a prepared, compact team, ready to exploit any situation that arises.
“Bennacer is doing fantastically well; he’s tearing up the track.” He’s only been with us for 8-9 days, and with such a long injury, I expect it to take a little longer. But he’s fine, and his return isn’t far off.”
