Scottie Montgomery, an assistant coach for the Detroit Lions, weighs in on the rumors.
Scottie Montgomery, a Duke University alumnus with a background in both playing and coaching, recently addressed rumors linking him to Duke’s head coaching position. Montgomery, who played at Duke and began his coaching career there, has a long relationship with the university and credits it with having a significant impact on his professional and personal development.
Montgomery, Scottie Considers Speculation
Montgomery has stated that he prefers professional football due to the NFL’s schedule and the impact on his family life. While he did not explicitly deny being approached for coaching positions, he did express a strong affinity for the NFL and, in particular, his time with the Detroit Lions. His remarks come in the context of Texas A&M hiring former Aggies defensive coordinator Mike Elko, who was previously the head coach at Duke.
“(Duke) kind of shaped me from a person who came from a small town in North Carolina, it gave me an ability to blossom through not only education, but meeting people that have a direct influence on my future path,” Montgomery responded in response to a question about what Duke means to him “Wow, that’s a lot. There, I learned how to work. There, I learned how to deal with difficult situations. I learned not only how to read to understand, but also how to read to help others understand, which is critical when it comes to coaching.”
“That’s a question I’ve heard may come up,” Montgomery explained. “I’ll tell you what, we’ll deal with it when it comes up.” I won’t say whether I’ve heard from them or not, but I enjoy professional football for a variety of reasons. I’ve always wanted to compete at the highest level, but you can’t say what you’ll or won’t do until that thing happens or doesn’t happen.
“The one thing I will say is that my family, particularly my children, enjoy the fact that we are in the National Football League.” Our offseason is quite distinct. Our time, communication, and ability to grow as a family are all unique. But, at the same time, there is a lot to the business and how it operates. So I love the National Football League, I worked hard to get back here, and I’m really excited to be not only in the NFL, but right here in Detroit.”
The Verdict – Montgomery’s Loyalty to the NFL and the Detroit Lions
Scottie Montgomery’s recent comments shed light on a coach who is deeply rooted in both the collegiate and professional realms. His journey from Duke University to the NFL, as well as his appreciation for the structure of the professional league, demonstrate his dedication to his current role with the Detroit Lions. While the allure of a head coaching position in college football is undeniable, Montgomery’s preference for the NFL environment and the benefits it provides for his family life paints a picture of a coach who values stability and the unique opportunities that the professional league provides.
Is it possible that Duke will call and Montgomery will accept the position? Anything is, of course, possible. That being said, it appears that he is content coaching in the NFL.
