ADVANCE DEAL: MLB Insider reveal Yankees in final negotiation in outfielder trade talks with san diego padres

The New York Yankees are still interested in San Diego Padres star outfielder Juan Soto. According to MLB Insider Andy Martino of SNY, the Yankees and Padres recently reached an agreement that included “exchanging” the names of players who could be included in the trade.

Soto will be a free agent after the 2024 MLB season, and the Padres, who are looking to cut costs, are unlikely to sign him to a long-term contract. This prompted the organization to field phone calls from prospective suitors in order to avoid losing the 25-year-old for nothing next offseason.

The Yankees are thought to be one of the most aggressive suitors, having begun exploratory talks with the Padres shortly after the end of the 2023 season. The initial asking price for the San Diego team was thought to be significantly higher than what the Yankees were looking to give up, but there is hope that the two sides can get closer in the coming weeks.

According to Martino, the Yankees are aware that Soto is a one-year rental, but that hasn’t stopped them from making a move for the three-time All-Star. After a disappointing season, the team hopes to return to the playoffs with Soto’s assistance. It doesn’t hurt that his appealing style of play would bring in even more fans.

Soto batted.275 in 2023, with a career-high 35 home runs and 109 RBIs. He was named an All-Star for the third time and received his fourth Silver Slugger Award in a row.
