Alabama Football has improved significantly under defensive coordinator Kevin Steele. Though standard yards-per-game statistics will not show significant improvement, the Alabama defense has improved significantly in terms of playing situational and opportunistic football.
This Alabama defense will face one of its toughest tests of the season when it faces Georgia in the SEC Championship. The Georgia offense has been a top-10 unit in college football all year, led by shrewd quarterback Carson Beck.
Beck has displayed great poise while throwing for nearly 3,500 yards and 25 total touchdowns. He rarely gets rattled and distributes the ball to a wide range of weapons in offensive coordinator Mike Bobo’s scheme.
Georgia relies on the running back tandem of Kendall Milton and Daijun Edwards in the ground game. The bruising duo has rushed for over 1,400 yards and 21 touchdowns. While Georgia’s run game isn’t as dominant as it once was, it’s still very effective behind the Bulldogs’ massive offensive line.
Brock Bowers, a junior tight end, is a key target in a balanced UGA passing attack. Bowers leads the team in every major receiving category despite missing three games due to an ankle injury, with 51 receptions for 661 yards and six touchdowns.
Ladd McConkey is Georgia’s second-best receiver, but he has missed five games in a row. Dominic Lovett and RaRa Thomas, as well as veteran Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, have filled in admirably. Oscar Delp, a tight end, is an underrated target who, in terms of versatility, can do a lot of the same things as Bowers.
Georgia’s receiving corps is one of the deepest in college football when everyone is healthy. Bobo and Beck will do everything they can to put pressure on Alabama’s defense.
Alabama Football, and in particular Kevin Steele’s unit, will be the most difficult test of the season for the Georgia offense as well. Can Alabama contain Georgia’s ground game? Can this team be the first to put pressure on Carson Beck and make him uncomfortable this season?
Nobody has been able to stop the Georgia offense for four quarters, so it is unknown how they would react in such a situation. Despite some recent slippage due to injury concerns at key positions, Alabama’s battle-tested defense matches up well against the Bulldogs.
