BREAKING NEWS: Yankees send Luis Severino two words sincere message after signing with Mets in free agency

After signing with the Mets in free agency, the Yankees thanked Luis Severino for his eight years of service.

Free agency is always an exciting time for fans who want to see their favorite teams improve their roster. However, free agency is also a time for farewells, and on Friday, Luis Severino completed his trade to the New York Mets, bringing an end to his eight-year tenure with the New York Yankees.

Luis Severino pens goodbye to Yankees after signing with Mets

Severino had already expressed his gratitude to the Yankees organization for taking a chance on him as an international free agent and allowing him to develop into his best self on the mound. The 29-year-old starting pitcher also stated that he will cherish every memory he has with the Yankees franchise as he advances in his career with the Mets.

Not to be outdone, the Yankees responded to Luis Severino’s sentiments with a message of thanks on their official Twitter (X) account.

“In pinstripes for eight seasons.” Every time you took the mound, you exuded unrivaled energy and passion. “Thank you, Sevy,” reads the Yankees’ message to Severino.

The Mets signed Luis Severino to a one-year, $13 million contract, so the Yankees could have outbid their in-city rivals if they wanted to. However, there is a lot of uncertainty surrounding Severino’s future because he hasn’t been in the best of health in recent years.

MLB free agency: Luis Severino moves from Yankees to Mets on 1-year, $13 million deal, per report

Severino has only pitched in 209.1 innings over the last four seasons, just 16 innings more than his breakout All-Star season in 2017, when he posted a 2.98 ERA. In terms of free agent upside, the Mets are banking on a clean bill of health for the 29-year-old, which could pave the way for a career turnaround after he posted a dreadful 6.65 ERA in 89.1 innings pitched in 2023.

The Yankees, on the other hand, wouldn’t miss Severino’s services all that much, especially if Nestor Cortes stays healthy and the Yankees manage to keep Michael King and/or Clarke Schmidt in the midst of their pursuit of San Diego Padres star hitter Juan Soto. The Yankees still have Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon to anchor the rotation, so they should be in good shape heading into the 2024 season.
