On Sunday evening, the Mariners and Braves agreed to a trade that will send young outfielder Jarred Kelenic to Atlanta.
Along with Kelenic, the Braves announced the addition of veteran left-handed pitcher Marco Gonzales and first baseman Evan White.
Right-handed pitchers Jackson Kowar and Cole Phillips are headed to Seattle in exchange.
The move represents a salary dump for the Mariners, who may be looking to free up some cash in order to pursue top free agents. Seattle is in desperate need of an outfielder, and the decision to release Kelenic will exacerbate that need.
Gonzales, 31, is due $12 million in 2024 and has a club option for $15 million in 2025. He had a 5.22 ERA in 10 starts last season.
White is under contract through 2028, with club options for the final three years of his deal. In 2024, he’ll earn $7 million. He’s been plagued by injuries in recent seasons, and he hasn’t played in an MLB game since 2021.
Kelenic, 24, was a former top prospect who struggled in his first MLB appearance. Kelenic had a.589 OPS in 149 games during his first two seasons in Seattle. In 2023, he rebounded with a.253 batting average,.746 OPS, and 11 home runs in 105 games.
