The Buffalo Bills are entering a critical period in their season that will determine whether they can make a late push for the playoffs, and the team may be looking to make a big offensive addition to help with the push.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Bills are one of four teams interested in two-time Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz, who was released by the Arizona Cardinals and cleared waivers.
“Two key free-agent decisions loom for two decorated players,” Schefter wrote for X. “Both former Colts LB Shaquille Leonard and former Cardinals TE Zach Ertz are free agents, and both are expected to find new teams within the next 48 hours, according to sources.”
The Chiefs, Bills, Ravens, and Eagles have all expressed interest in Ertz in varying degrees.”
The Bills are also expecting tight end Dawson Knox to return from injured reserve, which could influence their decision to pursue Ertz.
Zach Ertz could be a long shot for the Bills.
Though the Bills have expressed interest in Ertz, another team may have an advantage. Given the team’s history with Ertz, Eagles reporter Eliot Shorr-Parks predicted that Philadelphia would be the favorite.
“I’d be surprised if Zach Ertz has the option to return to Philadelphia but chooses another team,” Shorr-Parks wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Still has a ton of connections to the city and could win another ring with the #Eagles”
Timothy Rapp of Bleacher Report believes the Eagles are the most likely landing spot, noting that the timing could be right for a reunion.
“The Eagles chose to trade him in 2021 as Dallas Goedert assumed a larger role in the offense,” Rapp wrote in his piece. “However, with Goedert currently out and the Eagles ostensibly interested in surrounding Jalen Hurts with as many weapons as possible in preparation for a potential Super Bowl run, bringing back Ertz makes plenty of sense.”
Rapp stated that adding Ertz to an offense already stocked with Goedert, A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Julio Jones, and DeAndre Swift would “make the Philly offense pretty scary.”
Dawson Knox is on his way back
Knox is eligible to return from injured reserve, and head coach Sean McDermott has hinted that such a move is on the way. Knox and his wife will be back on the field for the Bills’ crucial game against the Kansas City Chiefs on December 10.
“Bills HC Sean McDermott said they are’hopeful but not certain’ that TE Dawson Knox will be able to return after their bye week and ahead of the Week 14 Chiefs game,” The Athletic’s Joe Buscaglia wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The Bills were defeated in overtime by the Philadelphia Eagles on November 26, dropping them out of the playoff picture in a competitive AFC. If they want to get back on track, they must first get through a difficult stretch that includes trips to Kansas City and a home game against the Dallas Cowboys.
