BEARS UPDATES: Bears insider reveal top candidates for Chicago Bears head coaching job

The Chicago Bears, who currently have a head coach, are making it clear that they intend to change coaches in the off-season.

According to reports last week, the Bears were holding internal discussions about hiring Jim Harbaugh as their head coach. This week, Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was added to the list of potential Bears head coaching candidates.

While it is clear that the Bears will not make a coaching change during the season, it is also clear that Eberflus will not be the team’s head coach beyond this season. The only exception would be if the Bears finish strong and make the playoffs.

The fact that the Bears have identified two candidates to be their next head coach suggests that team president Kevin Warren will make changes after this season.

When the Bears were looking to replace Matt Nagy after the 2021 season, Bieniemy should have been a stronger candidate. However, given that Bieniemy held the same position as Nagy prior to his hiring in 2018, there would have undoubtedly been pushback.

It’s looking increasingly likely that the Bears will have the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The Bears’ desire to hire an offensive-minded head coach like Bieniemy to pair with Justin Fields and Marvin Harrison Jr. is flawed. Passing on either Caleb Williams or Drake Maye in a quarterback draft class that includes two legitimate quarterback prospects in Caleb Williams and Drake Maye for a fourth year of evaluation on a quarterback who has failed to progress in three seasons would be a criminal mistake.
