On Thursday night, Bears fans rejoiced after the New England Patriots defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers.

This is the section where I’m supposed to say how only Patriots fans, Steelers fans, and total sickos watched the very meh Thursday Night Football game between New England and Pittsburgh, but Lord knows there are plenty of sickos out there who watched every second of it, including myself. But I also belong to a very important fourth camp: I’m a Chicago Bears fan who was hoping that the Pittsburgh Steelers would lose for the second time in five days to a team that was threatening the Carolina Panthers for the league’s worst record. And, wouldn’t you know it…

The Bears’ chances of securing the first overall pick in the 2024 Draft through the Carolina Panthers were somewhere between 65 and 70 percent as of Thursday night, depending on where you looked. Given New England’s 21-18 victory over the Steelers last night, those odds must have risen.

The irony here is that the Bears have been helped by former Bears for the second year in a row. Last season, in the final week of the season, former Bears head coach Lovie Smith led the Houston Texans to a week 18 victory that clinched the Bears’ first-round pick. Former Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky has been at the helm for each of the Steelers’ last two losses, to Arizona and New England, two of the biggest threats to Chicago’s bid to own the first overall pick in the NFL Draft for the second consecutive season.

Of course, the Bears have their own pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, which appears to be somewhere between 6 and 10.
