It’s not often that coaches get to witness the toughness they hope to instill in their players. However, just days after undergoing emergency surgery, Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy will be calling plays on Sunday. McCarthy underwent surgery on Wednesday for acute appendicitis, putting his availability for Sunday Night Football against the visiting Philadelphia Eagles in doubt. The Week 14 game is the most important of the regular season, with Dallas having the opportunity to tie Philadelphia for first place in the NFC East.
McCarthy spoke on Friday to provide a quick update and confirm what Cowboys assistants already knew. “I’m feeling great,” McCarthy declared. “I anticipate everything staying normal come Sunday night.” Dallas anticipates having the architect of the “Texas Coast Offense” on the sidelines, but it is not without risk. He’ll be only four days removed from a legitimate medical procedure, and strenuous activity is generally discouraged. He won’t be running any routes on Sunday, but collisions that spill out of bounds aren’t uncommon.

The Cowboys are 3.5-point favorites to even the season series with the Eagles. Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles is injured and not firing on all cylinders, which the San Francisco 49ers exploited in Week 13. The 49ers’ 42-19 victory allows Dallas to take an important step toward a division title.
Sunday promises to be exciting, with quarterback Dak Prescott on an MVP-like pace and Philadelphia looking to defend its lead. The knowledge that a (healthy) McCarthy will be present should give Cowboys fans a boost of confidence during an otherwise stressful rivalry week.
