The Detroit Tigers have made a move to strengthen their bullpen as they look to return to contention in 2024.
According to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press on Twitter:
Andrew Chafin’s contract with the #Tigers includes a base salary of $4.25 million in 2024, as well as up to $1.25 million in incentives.
The club option for 2025 is $6.5 million, with incentives of up to $1.25 million. The option is worth $500,000 if exercised. The agreement is expected to be finalized on Monday.
It’s a smart move for Detroit, as manager A.J. Hinch now has more matchup options in the bullpen. In addition to Chafin, the Tigers have signed Kenta Maeda and traded for Mark Canha this offseason. They also signed a long-term contract extension with manager AJ Hinch.
Chafin is a 10-year veteran at the age of 33. In his career, he has pitched for the Diamondbacks, Cubs, Athletics, Tigers, and Brewers. He pitched for the Diamondbacks and Brewers in 2023, going 3-4 with a 4.73 ERA.
He had a great year in Detroit in 2022, posting a 2.83 ERA over 64 games, so the team is hoping he can replicate those numbers.
Along with contributions from the newcomers, the Tigers will be hoping for a healthy year from the rest of the pitching staff. The team’s planned young core of Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal, and Matt Manning has never been able to be healthy at the same time.
In 2023, Detroit finished second in the American League Central.
