Marvin Harrison Jr., an Ohio State wide receiver, was not present at the Heisman Trophy ceremony last night. He came in fourth in the voting, but being in front of the press is part of the ceremony. Despite being projected as a top-five pick in the NFL Draft, Harrison Jr. has been adamant that he has not decided what he will do in 2024. On Saturday night, he remained cryptic.
Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. On 2024
A local Buckeyes beat writer got the impression that the son of an NFL Hall of Famer is still undecided. He referred to his college career as “so far” and made no mention of his future plans. Harrison Jr. has stated his desire to defeat the Michigan Wolverines and compete in the Big Ten Championship. That would also imply a College Football Playoff appearance by default. The Buckeyes haven’t beaten Michigan since Harrison Jr. arrived in Columbus, and he appears to want to do so before he graduates.
The Game Is Changed By NIL
NIL means Harrison Jr. can earn at least as much as a top-five draft pick rookie contract. However, I believe this is a bit short-sighted. Yes, Harrison Jr. could make just as much in the short term, but he is delaying his ability to sign a mega extension by a year. NIL cannot compete with an NFL maximum wide receiver contract. In football, a lot can happen in another year, and I believe returning would be a huge risk.
Finally, I believe he will join the NFL, but the fact that he appears to be seriously considering it makes me hesitant to make a prediction. This will be a fascinating storyline to follow during the college football offseason.
